Age is just a number

While in the jeepney on my way to work, I handed my 20 peso bill to the driver and told him where I'm gonna get off. He gave me 7 pesos for the change. Grinning, I promptly gave back the extra 2 pesos and the driver smiled and said "Abi man gud nako studyante" (I thought you're a student).

I am 29.

This scene isn't new to me as it happened many times before. And not only in this kind of situation. I may sound too conceited here, so you may stop now and close your browser's window. But if you don't mind, go on and read this self-absorbed post.

I remember the time in college when my classmates and I went to watch an R-18 movie. And I, not even the smallest in the group, have to be asked for an ID. I showed mine and the lady-in-charge gave me that doubtful look. Oh well, the perils of looking young - you're on a high risk of possibly not being able to enjoy the privileges of adults. Haha.

Or that time when I was paying at the cashier while carrying my 2 year old son, an old man next to me heedlessly and tactlessly said that I should have finished my studies first before I got myself pregnant. Not that I took offense to it but I still think he shouldn't be poking his nose to other people's lives, should he? Especially when one doesn't even know a thing about a person. But anyway, I have news for you Mister: I am 26. No longer a kolehiyala. And yes, I have a degree in BS Nursing. Eat that! Haha. Kidding. I just smiled and politely told him I'm old enough to be a mom.
At 26 with my 2year old grumpy monster.
He's so cute here.
Or that time on my first day at work when an office mate told me I look like a fresh graduate. Even a fellow designer told me I look high school. Seriously?! I was 28 then.
First day at work. 2013.
And yes, I still have a lot more to tell. But I won't go any further 'cause I might just bore you with the same old story: to be told a lot of times that I don't look my age. Well, I own it. So thank you. :)

For those who are asking what's the secret to my youthful look: I have nothing. Really. I don't even have that flawless kutis artista skin if that's what you're thinking; especially that I get exposed under the scorching heat of a high noon sun everyday.

But let me share you how I live my life because maybe these can also be contributing factors for looking young:

1. I eat vegetables. Every day. I wouldn't go on details of what vegetables can do to your body because you've been told about this constantly since the day you were born.

2. I don't eat junk food. Okay, I do. But only at a very minimal level to almost nothing.

3. I don't smoke. Smoking accelerates aging. Did you know that?

4. I stay active. I make sure I play sports or any form of excercise at least once a week. Exercise releases endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people look younger.

5. I drink a lot of water. Do I have to explain this?

6. I don't wear make-up. I can only think of two reasons why: I am lazy and I don't know how to apply it. I'm very much okay with baby powder and lip balm for my everyday wear.

7. I smile. A lot. It's in my nature; so it spontaneously comes out of me. You should do too because it makes you feel better. Smiling requires less muscle movement than frowning. So wear more smiles and less frowns. ^_^

These and, of course, a big help from my genes (my mom still rocks in her 50s) and perhaps my ectomorph body build may have all contributed in making me look young.

But more than that, I think being young at heart is what all that really matters. So forget about those anti-aging miracle creams, botox, and whatnot. If you want to stop the clock, you need to think, feel, and act younger. After all, age is just a number.

I see myself 30 years from now that I'll be rockin in my 60s. They said I look younger than my age and I act younger than I look. So what would that make me now? Haha. Go figure.
Hello. I come in peace.
