15 Problems Every Bookworm Will Understand

By Sarah Aterrado - June 17, 2015

My bookshelf
I'm running out of space and I still think I need more books.

Yep, that's the problem. I don't think there's such thing as having enough shelves. Haha. That and bumping into a post or a wall while walking and reading are just few of the many problems a bookworm encounters. Allow me to share with you 15 more. And please, don't take it lightly because the struggle is real.

1. When asked what your favorite book is. This is probably the most difficult question any book lover will come across with. It will leave you blank and dumb. I have quite a few favorite books, so it would be impossible to choose just one. Rest assured, Twilight or Fifty Shades of Grey is not one of them.

2. When you are unsure how you should feel knowing that your favorite book will find its way to the big screen. Should I be excited or do I feel dismayed?

And if it does...

3. Being in a constant struggle of welcoming the frustrating world of book-to-movie adaptations. And constantly having to say, "The book is better." Especially when the movie gets everything wrong or when the actors just don't fit the characters.

4. Moving. Enough said.

5. Missing a meal because the book is too good. That also includes, missing a ride, a call, and sleep. Yes, lots of sleep.

6. When you walk into a bookstore and you are on a constant battle with yourself in fighting the urge to pick a book and take out your wallet. And you lose.

7. When you finish a book and you'll have to wait a year or two (or it could be worse. I'm looking at you, George R.R. Martin) for the sequel. And worse, it ended on a cliffhanger. Then you suddenly feel empty and agonize on the period of anticipation.

8. And when the sequel comes, you forget a lot of things. Like, who was that unimportant character in the previous book again who suddenly have a big role in this sequel? Or, how did this happen and how did it end up like this?

9. When you lend a book and it was returned in a terrible condition. This includes dog-eared pages. A little part of me dies every time a book gets damaged. But that doesn't mean I expect a book be in the same condition I lent it. Every crease on the spine is a mark of love each time you open a book, and it is perfectly natural. Just be gentle, and we're good.

10. Or worse, it is not returned at all. Yep, I still hate you. And if you're reading this, you know who you are.

11. When you already have an e-reader, and you find yourself still seeking for the scent of the books. This is probably one of the reasons why people have not totally given up on books even with the revolution of the digital world. It smells better than roses.

12. When you have a to-be-read pile and you still hoard books like they're running out of stock.

13. Then you end up not knowing what to read next.

14. Then you suddenly run out of books to read. How did this even happen?!
Fantasy Bookshelf
My Fantasy shelf. :)
15. Finishing a book and wanting to stay in that world because you know how much the real world sucks. My inner 11-year old self is still waiting for that Hogwarts letter.

16. The sudden death of your favorite character hurts more than your last breakup. And you just can't handle all the feels.

17. When you have more books than your clothes and shoes combined. Should I feel bad about this?

18. When you own multiple copies. Just because sometimes cover redesigns are drop-dead gorgeous and you just have to have a different book format (hardcovers and paperbacks). I cringe at books with covers of the movie adaptation though.
Barnes and Noble Leatherbound Classics
Just like this one. My Barnes and Noble Leatherbound Collection. Who could resist these beauties?
19. When you have to miss a popular movie or a tv series just because you haven't read the book yet. Because books can give you more than the motion picture. And reading the book after watching the movie makes the book fall a little flat, boring, and uninteresting sometimes. At least, that's what I think.

20. When someone tries to shove a genre down your throat and you really can't digest it. Some genres just do not suit your taste. I admit it, I'm not really into sappy love stories. I always stuck up my nose at the romance genre. Although there are a few exceptions. But really, I get easily bored. To each his own, they say.

21. When you get emotionally or mentally scarred by books. You experience emotional trauma at the hands of a paperback, even provoking you to tears. But despite that, you feel happy more than anything else. So you really couldn't care less feeling heart broken over and over again.

22. Finding a comfortable reading position doesn't seem to end. Sit or lie? On my side, back, or chest? Curl up or stretch? Feet up or down?

23. That feeling when you grudgingly have to put down a good book because the dishes are already piling up in the sink. But just one more chapter won't hurt, right?

24. When an unseen magnetic force suddenly draws you into a bookshelf of a house you are visiting. It's the first thing I actually look at with interest. And I am not apologetic if I suddenly become too talkative about the shelf.

25. When your life goals include having a library. With a sliding ladder at that.

And when you try to write 15 problems only bookworms would understand, you end up having more and you still have the urge to write but you already need to give it a rest. And of course, when you find yourself able to relate to, if not all, most of these. Oh well, what else can I say? Bookworms have a lot of problems but having too many books isn't one. :-)

  6. The first thing I did, not to read your post right away sorry not sorry, was to see if I can name books on you blog's first picture and yes, long live Potterheads! I first saw the HP series and I came to conclusion that we'll be good friends. Hahaha And I saw Roth's series. I died. Your B&B were gorgeous too, I envy you! (And now as I'm writing this it occurs to me that I'm not even talking about Bookworm Problems because I'm distracted with your books! Another problem I guess. Hahaha) You nailed this post girl!

    1. Yes. Actually, that's also of one the problems. Everytime I visit shareyourshelf.tumblr.com I get distracted by the books. I mean, I like to look at what titles are on their shelves. And it makes me happy whenever I see one that's the same with me. :)

  10. There's so much on this list I can relate with, except that I don't own such tons of books like yours. I also struggle for space that I turn my shoe rack and some compartments of my wardrobe into a bookshelf. And, yes! How I wish I could stay in that world from the book I just read. Books do take me anywhere and it's my way to escape the reality--figuratively...

  11. I can super relate to this one, Sarah! Speaking of #25, can we talk about how Beast was the best Disney prince for giving Belle that freakin' library!?!? Hahaha :) As much as I want to avoid bookstores and clear my "to read" pile, the urge to "tingin lang" is too strong. And we bookworms know that "tingin lang" always ends up with a book or two on our way out. :))
